Nathaniel Russell, the son of a Chief Justice of Rhode Island, was born 1728 and removed
to Charleston ca 1769 where he became one of the city's wealthiest merchants. He was elected the first president of the
New England Society because of he organized a group of Charlestonians of New England origin, and was popularly known as The King of the Yankees.
Nathaniel Russell completed this home in 1808.
